Fabian Schwaerzler, the designer of our L-series with the watches L1, L2 and L3 takes part in the Swiss Design Award 2019. With his minimalist style, his love for good craftsmanship and sustainability, he enters the race for the prestigious awards. We accompany it with pride.
WHO: The product designer Fabian Schwaerzler stands for affordable and high-quality object design.
WHEN: Fabian Schwaerzler obtained his bachelor’s in industrial design from ZHdK, following an apprenticeship as a locksmith. He worked as a designer at Maarten Van Severen in Ghent until 2005, when he moved to Vitra in Basel as a designer in the product development department. In 2006 he opened his own studio.
His work was featured in the Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2018, 2017 and 2016. His studio was presented at Baselworld in 2017, while in 2016 he participated in Orgatec, Cologne and Designer’s Saturday Langenthal.
WHERE: Fabian Schwaerzler works on long-term collaborations with his clients, which include Maurice de Mauriac and Tossa. Schwaerzler’s work has been featured in many magazines, including Watch Time, Monocle, Wohnrevue, NZZ residence, Schöner Wohnen and Hochparterre.
WHAT: NILO is a table produced by Tossa. Tossa and Thut Möbel together operate a factory in which they produce locally on fair terms. The design is characterised by the use of environmentally friendly materials and sustainable production conditions, but also by its affordable prices.
The chair C1 is produced in collaboration with Colos in Italy. The manufacturing methods were tailored to the possibilities of the existing factory in Italy. Steel — a sustainable, almost infinitely recyclable material — was used.
WHY: “New ideas occur out of a field of experiments. I build kind of a net structure out of ideals, wishes, inspirations from watch books, technical possibilities, essential design thinking, and the question ‘What could be done better?’” (Interview in Watch Time)
